Starlink Mini: Setup Guide, Real-World Speeds, and Pricing in 2026

The Starlink Mini is a portable satellite internet dish that weighs about 2.4 pounds, has a Wi-Fi router built in, and sets up through a phone app in a few minutes. As of mid-2026 it costs $199 outright or $16 a month for 12 months, and the Roam plans that run it cost $55, $80, or $175 a month in the United States. Real-world download speeds range from under 30 Mbps in rural Idaho to over 150 Mbps on a van roof, and tree cover is the most common cause of poor results.

Many Starlink Mini articles still show prices and travel rules from 2025 or early 2026. Both have changed. This guide covers the current costs, the setup steps, the speed test results from independent outlets, and the roaming limits that took effect in August 2026.

What Changed for the Starlink Mini in 2026

Three things changed this year, and most existing coverage misses at least one of them.

The hardware price fell. Mobile Internet Resource Center reported on July 28, 2026 that the Mini kit costs $199 outright, or $16 a month for 12 months on a 0 percent installment agreement, which totals $192. In January 2026, SlashGear listed the Mini at $499.99, with a Best Buy discount down to $229.99.

The Roam plans were restructured. SlashGear’s January figures were a 50GB plan at $50 a month and Unlimited at $165. The Wayward Home reports that Roam 100GB, at $55, replaced the 50GB tier, and a 300GB tier at $80 was added in May 2026. Unlimited is now $175 a month in the US.

International use got stricter. Under rules that applied to new customers from July 14, 2026 and existing customers from August 17, 2026, the 100GB and 300GB plans work only in your home country or region. Details are in the roaming section below.

Mobile Internet Resource Center also noted that the larger Standard dish, priced at $349, was briefly pulled from Roam sales on July 1 and returned by July 28. Starlink changes its lineup and prices often, so check Starlink’s own site before you order.

Starlink Mini Specifications

BroadbandNow’s September 2026 review lists the Mini at about 11.75 by 10.2 by 1.45 inches and 2.43 pounds, which it compares to a thick laptop. It has a built-in dual-band Wi-Fi 5 router rated for up to 1,200 square feet.

Power draw is the figure that matters for anyone running it off a battery. BroadbandNow measured 15 watts idle, 20 to 35 watts in normal use, and peaks of 40 to 60 watts during a cold boot or heavy load. SlashGear’s January roundup of user reports put the average at 25 to 40 watts. At 30 watts, a 300-watt-hour battery would run the dish for roughly 10 hours before losses, so a day of remote work needs more capacity than most small power banks offer.

The Wayward Home, a travel blog written by a full-time van traveler, reports no service differences between the Mini and the Standard dish in normal use, though it lists the Mini as topping out around 100 Mbps. That limit is a single source’s estimate and not a Starlink specification.

How to Set Up the Starlink Mini

A Starlink setup guide published by US Mobile describes the steps below for Starlink dishes in general, and notes that the Mini is simpler because the router sits inside the dish.

Download the App and Create an Account

Install the Starlink app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, and sign in or create an account on starlink.com. You can complete this step at home, before you travel, which saves time at the campsite.

Check the Sky for Obstructions

Use the app’s visibility tool before you place the dish. US Mobile’s guide suggests imagining that you are lying on your back at the dish location. You should see mostly open sky in a wide circle roughly 100 degrees across. The app reports an obstruction percentage, and the guide recommends keeping it under 2 percent. Trees and tall buildings are the usual problem.

Place the Dish and Connect Power

Set the dish outdoors with a clear sky view and connect power. Because the router is built in, there is no separate router cable to run on the Mini. US Mobile estimates 15 to 30 minutes for a basic ground setup, and 45 to 90 minutes for a permanent roof mount.

Wait for Alignment and Join the Wi-Fi Network

The dish takes about 2 to 10 minutes to find satellites. Once it does, connect your phone or laptop to the Starlink Wi-Fi network and set a custom name and password in the app. Run a speed test to confirm the connection.

Starlink Mini Real-World Speeds

Speed results vary more than the marketing suggests, and the spread comes mostly from location and sky view. The results below are a selection from published tests.

Independent Test Results

SlashGear’s January 2026 roundup collected results from three outlets. CNET’s Joe Supan recorded 127 Mbps down and 17 Mbps up while testing in the mountains. The Verge’s Thomas Ricker averaged 154.8 Mbps with the dish mounted on a van roof. PCMag’s Brian Westover averaged under 30 Mbps in rural Idaho, with some days below 10 Mbps.

BroadbandNow tested in Seattle in September 2026 and recorded downloads of 70 to 180 Mbps, with a 125 Mbps average, uploads of 10 to 22 Mbps averaging 16 Mbps, and latency of 28 to 42 ms, averaging 35 ms. That is low enough for video calls and casual gaming.

Network-Wide Median Speeds

Ookla’s 2025 Global Satellite Broadband Performance Report, covered by Telecompetitor on February 4, 2026, put Starlink’s US median at 117.74 Mbps down and 16.91 Mbps up. The FCC benchmark for broadband is 100 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up, so Starlink met the download figure and fell about 3 Mbps short on upload. Ookla’s figure covers all Starlink users, not the Mini specifically.

What Explains the Gap

Obstructions explain most of the spread. SlashGear’s roundup cited reports that even light tree cover caused persistent connectivity problems. The Idaho result and the van-roof result are both honest measurements, taken in different conditions. Expect upload speeds around 10 to 20 Mbps in good conditions, which matters for video calls and file uploads more than most buyers expect.

Starlink Mini Pricing and Plans

The hardware is a one-time $199, or $16 a month for 12 months. The monthly service is separate. Mobile Internet Resource Center reported the current Roam plans as follows.

Roam 100GB

This plan costs $55 a month. BroadbandNow describes it as suited to weekend trips. It is limited to your home country or region.

Roam 300GB

This plan costs $80 a month and fits frequent travelers. It was added in May 2026 and is also limited to your home country or region.

Roam Unlimited

This plan costs $175 a month and is aimed at full-time travelers. It is the only Roam plan that allows international use, within the 30-day rule described below.

The installment plan is a purchase and not a rental. According to Mobile Internet Resource Center, customers can switch between Roam plans or activate Standby Mode without penalty, but canceling service early triggers payment of the remaining balance.

A first-year cost for a US buyer, using the $199 kit and 12 months of service, works out to $859 on Roam 100GB, $1,159 on Roam 300GB, and $2,299 on Roam Unlimited. Those totals assume you pay for service all year. If Standby Mode lets you pause service during months you do not travel, the real cost is lower, but Standby Mode’s current pricing could not be confirmed, so check Starlink’s site.

Power gear adds to the bill. SlashGear’s roundup noted that batteries, solar panels, and car adapters are an extra expense on top of the dish and plan.

International Travel Rules

The rules changed in the summer of 2026, and travelers who relied on older advice are the most likely to be caught out.

Mobile Internet Resource Center reported that the new rules applied to new customers from July 14, 2026 and existing customers from August 17, 2026. Roam 100GB and Roam 300GB can now be used only in your home country or region. Roam Unlimited allows a maximum of 30 consecutive days outside your registered home country or grouped region. After that, you must return home to reset the allowance, upgrade to Local Priority (up to 60 total days) or Global Priority (unlimited international use), or transfer service to another country, which carries a 90-day restriction.

Travel Registration is also required. Customers must provide personal information, a passport or other government-issued photo ID, and a live portrait, and registration does not guarantee service. The Wayward Home notes that the US and Canada count as one region, while Mexico does not. SlashGear’s January roundup said travelers could use the dish for up to two months outside the home country. That is no longer accurate for Roam Unlimited.

Who Should Buy the Starlink Mini

The Mini suits people who need internet in places without cellular or cable service and who move often: RV and van travelers, campers, remote workers with a backup need, and people who want a portable link at a cabin. Its size and built-in router make it easy to pack.

It suits people less if they need a permanent home connection, if they live where trees surround the only usable spot, or if they plan long international trips on a Roam plan below Unlimited. A person who needs steady upload speeds for large files should plan for the 10 to 20 Mbps range seen in testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the Starlink Mini cost in 2026?

Mobile Internet Resource Center reported on July 28, 2026 that the Mini kit costs $199 outright or $16 a month for 12 months. Service is extra, at $55 for Roam 100GB, $80 for Roam 300GB, or $175 for Roam Unlimited. Prices change often, so confirm them on Starlink’s site.
