<p class="wp-block-paragraph">India is set to conduct its first national civil-defence mock drill in over five decades on <strong>Wednesday, May 7, 2025</strong>. The Union Home Ministry has ordered a massive <strong>nationwide exercise</strong> covering 244 designated civil-defence districts. This unprecedented drill, triggered by the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, will test India’s readiness for wartime emergencies – from air raids and blackouts to mass evacuations and rescue operations. The exercise is meant to <strong>boost preparedness against hostile attacks</strong>, not signal any real emergency. As Home Secretary Govind Mohan noted, “the conduct of the exercise is planned up to the village level,” aiming to “assess and enhance the readiness of civil defence mechanisms across all states and Union territories.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Participating States and Cities</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The drill spans <strong>all states and Union territories</strong>. Major cities like <strong>Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Pune</strong>, and others are participating. Border and high-alert zones, including Jammu &; Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and the Northeast, are receiving special focus.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Objectives of the Drill</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The government clarified this is <strong>not in response to any imminent war threat</strong>, but a <strong>civil-preparedness exercise</strong> simulating aerial attacks. Key objectives include:</p>

<li><strong>Air-raid siren testing</strong></li>



<li><strong>City-wide blackout simulations</strong></li>



<li><strong>Evacuation drills</strong> in schools, colonies, malls, hospitals</li>



<li><strong>Camouflage of critical infrastructure</strong> (like refineries, airports)</li>



<li><strong>Mock communication with Indian Air Force and emergency control rooms</strong></li>



<li><strong>Training of civilians and student cadets in emergency protocols</strong></li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to <a>News18</a>, the aim is to ensure civilians can respond calmly to alerts, avoid chaos, and support orderly evacuations or blackouts.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The drill is being coordinated by the <strong>Union Home Ministry</strong>, in collaboration with the <strong>National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)</strong>. District magistrates and local civil defence controllers are supervising execution on the ground.</p>
