There is no Apple Vision Pro 2 on sale, and Apple has not announced one. The headset you can buy today is the Vision Pro with the M5 chip, which went on sale on October 22, 2025. After a June 2026 price increase, it starts at $3,699 in the United States. On September 27, 2026, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that a true successor likely won’t arrive before late 2028 or early 2029, and that there is still no guarantee a new headset will ever launch.

Rumor articles since 2024 predicted a second-generation headset in 2025 or 2026. What shipped was a chip refresh with a new head strap. This article covers what the current model offers, what it costs now, how sales went, and what is known about whatever comes next.

Is There an Apple Vision Pro 2?

Not in the sense most people mean. Apple sells one product, called Apple Vision Pro, and the October 2025 version replaced the original M2 model with an M5 chip, a Dual Knit Band, and a few hardware tweaks. The body of the headset is the same design that launched on February 2, 2024. The Gadgeteer, summarizing Gurman’s reporting, noted that earlier predictions of a 2026 release were conflated with the M5 model, which is a minor update and not a full sequel.

Two other rumored products have also fallen away. Gurman reported in October 2025 that Apple cancelled the lighter, cheaper headset known as Vision Air. A January 2026 PYMNTS summary of Financial Times reporting also mentioned an expected cheaper, lower-spec version in 2026. In May 2026, MacRumors summarized Gurman as saying no such product was in active development, and reported that members of the former Vision Products Group had been moved to other projects, including Apple’s smart glasses and Siri.

The picture is not perfectly consistent. Tom’s Hardware pointed out that Apple continued to post Vision Products Group job listings in 2026, and one listing described the technology as “now expanding to iOS and macOS.” Gurman’s September 2026 report then described work on the successor as being on “life support” but not stopped. The exact status of the program is unsettled.

Vision Pro M5 Specifications

Apple’s October 2025 press release is the source for the hardware details below. Apple’s performance figures are manufacturer claims, not independent tests.

Chip and Performance

The M5 Vision Pro uses Apple’s M5 chip, built on third-generation 3-nanometer technology, with a 10-core CPU, a 10-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says the Neural Engine runs AI features up to 50 percent faster for system experiences and up to twice as fast for third-party apps. Road to VR added that the GPU supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading, which matters mainly for games.

Display and Refresh Rate

The custom micro-OLED displays render 10 percent more pixels than the M2 model, and the headset supports refresh rates up to 120Hz. Apple’s claim covers rendered pixels and refresh rate. It did not announce a new display panel.

Battery Life and Weight

Apple rates the battery at up to 2.5 hours of general use and up to 3 hours of video playback, about 30 minutes more than the M2 version according to MacRumors. The battery still sits in an external pack connected by cable. The headset itself weighs more than 1.3 pounds, a figure MacRumors cited as a lingering comfort problem even with the new band.

Dual Knit Band

The Dual Knit Band ships in the box with the M5 model and sells separately for $99. MacRumors described it as an attempt to improve comfort, though the headset’s weight remains the larger complaint.

Storage and Software

The headset comes in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB configurations. It shipped with visionOS 26, which added spatial widgets that stay pinned in a room, more realistic Personas for FaceTime, and spatial scenes generated from ordinary photos. It also supports the PlayStation VR2 Sense controller and the PS5 DualSense gamepad.

Where It Launched

Pre-orders opened October 15, 2025 in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States. China mainland and Singapore opened on October 17. In-store availability began October 22 in select countries, with South Korea and Taiwan to follow later.

How Much Does the Vision Pro Cost Now?

Most pages ranking for this query still list $3,499. That figure is out of date. On June 25, 2026, Apple raised Vision Pro prices by $200 across all storage tiers as part of a wider round of increases that also hit Macs, iPads, HomePod, and Apple TV, according to MacRumors.

The current US prices are $3,699 for 256GB, $3,899 for 512GB, and $4,199 for 1TB. Before the change they were $3,499, $3,699, and $3,999. Apple CEO Tim Cook told the Wall Street Journal that the increases had become unavoidable because of rising memory and storage chip costs.

Accessories add to the total. Apple’s launch pricing listed the travel case at $199, ZEISS Optical Inserts at $99 for readers and $149 for prescription lenses, and the PlayStation VR2 Sense controller at $249.95. A buyer who needs prescription lenses and a case is looking at a base cost near $4,050 before tax. Accessory prices were set at launch and may have shifted in the June round, so check Apple’s store before ordering.

What Happened to Vision Pro Sales

The sales figures explain why Apple’s plans changed. The Financial Times reported on January 1, 2026 that around 390,000 units shipped in 2024, that Luxshare, the assembly partner, halted production at the start of 2025, and that IDC expected only about 45,000 units to ship in the fourth quarter of 2025. The same report said Apple cut digital advertising spending by more than 95 percent year to date in markets including the US and UK, and that Apple sold the headset directly in 13 countries without expanding that footprint in 2025.

Morgan Stanley analyst Erik Woodring attributed the weak demand to the cost, the form factor, and a shortage of apps built natively for visionOS. The same report put the broader VR market at a 14 percent year-over-year decline, with Meta’s Quest line taking roughly 80 percent of unit sales.

In April 2026, MacRumors reported that Apple had sold only around 600,000 Vision Pro units since launch and that the M5 refresh failed to revive interest. It also cited an unusually high return rate, described as far above that of any other modern Apple product, though no percentage was given. The 600,000 figure comes from that report and is not an Apple disclosure. Apple does not publish Vision Pro unit sales.

When Will the Next Vision Pro Launch?

The most recent reporting points to late 2028 or early 2029 at the earliest. Gurman wrote in May 2026 that a successor would not arrive for at least two more years. His September 27, 2026 newsletter, summarized by MacRumors, gave the later window and said the effort is on “life support” while Apple puts its resources into smart glasses. Senior Vision Pro leaders are reportedly working to keep funding in place.

That September report also gave the first detail on what the team is considering. Apple is exploring four concepts for a new headset under the codename N224. Senior decision-makers reject Meta’s approach of moving the processor into a separate pocket unit and prefer something closer to an all-in-one design. To cut weight, which Gurman described as the current model’s main flaw, Apple is testing plastic, titanium, and other metals.

Smart glasses come first. Gurman reported that Apple aims to release them in late 2027. MacRumors earlier described the initial version as similar to Ray-Ban Meta glasses, with cameras and AI features but no built-in display.

None of this is an Apple announcement. Every date above comes from Bloomberg’s reporting, and Apple has not confirmed any future Vision hardware.

What Apple Is Doing With the Current Headset

Apple is still shipping software for the hardware that exists. At WWDC 2026, it announced visionOS 27, due this fall for both the M2 and M5 models, according to UploadVR. The update adds a Siri overhaul powered by a large language model, on-headset 4K screen recording for up to three minutes, and support for third-party accessories tracked by infrared LEDs at 90Hz. It also brings object tracking for held items and new RealityKit features including Gaussian splat rendering and cloth simulation.

The accessory tracking framework is notable because it opens the door to third-party controllers.

The Competitor Apple Is Now Being Measured Against

On September 24, 2026, Meta announced Meta VR Glasses, a glasses-style headset priced at $1,299 and due in spring 2027, according to MacDailyNews. It weighs about 100 grams on the face, roughly one-sixth of the Vision Pro. The two micro-OLED panels run at about 2,412 by 2,288 pixels per eye at up to 120Hz. The processor, battery, and cooling fan live in a pocket-sized puck connected by cable, and the battery lasts about three hours.

Gurman tested the device for nearly an hour and wrote that it is the Vision Pro Apple should have shipped. He also noted that the Vision Pro keeps advantages in field of view, light sealing, and software polish. The comparison matters because it shows the gap that Apple’s next design has to close, on both price and weight.

Should You Buy Now or Wait?

If you want a Vision Pro for work, development, or media viewing, the M5 model is the only version Apple sells, and nothing in the reporting suggests a better one before late 2028. Waiting for a “Vision Pro 2” would mean waiting at least two years, with no guarantee of a result.

Buyers who are price-sensitive have a different calculation. Meta’s headset ships in spring 2027 at less than half the Vision Pro’s current starting price, and Apple’s own lighter model is not on any confirmed schedule. It comes down to whether you need what the Vision Pro does today. Its display quality and visionOS ecosystem remain ahead of rivals, and its price and weight remain the reasons most people have passed on it.

A related point for existing owners of the M2 model: the M5 upgrade is a modest step. Faster chip performance and a more comfortable band are real, but the headset’s weight is only slightly different, and visionOS 27 will run on both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Vision Pro M5 the same as Vision Pro 2?

Many outlets use the names interchangeably, but Apple does not. The M5 model is a refresh of the original headset with a faster chip, a 120Hz display mode, and a Dual Knit Band. A redesigned headset with a lighter body has not been announced, and reports place it no earlier than late 2028.

What is the Apple Vision Pro price in October 2026?

The Vision Pro starts at $3,699 for 256GB, $3,899 for 512GB, and $4,199 for 1TB in the United States. Apple raised each tier by $200 on June 25, 2026, citing rising memory and storage costs. Accessories such as the travel case and ZEISS lenses cost extra.

Is Apple cancelling the Vision Pro?

Apple has not said so. Reports in 2026 claimed the company had effectively given up and moved the team to smart glasses and Siri, while Apple continued to post job listings and announced visionOS 27 for both current models. Gurman’s latest report says the successor is on life support but not formally cancelled.

When will Apple release smart glasses?

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported on September 27, 2026 that Apple is aiming for late 2027. Early versions are expected to resemble Ray-Ban Meta glasses, with cameras and AI features but no display. Apple has not confirmed a product or a date.

Will visionOS 27 work on my Vision Pro?

Yes, if you own either the M2 or the M5 model. UploadVR reported that visionOS 27 is coming this fall for both versions. Some features announced at WWDC, such as the Siri overhaul, are expected later in the year rather than at the initial release.
