Signal is the best encrypted messaging app for most people who want strong privacy and a large circle of contacts. If you want to hide who you talk to as well as what you say, SimpleX, Session, and Briar go further on metadata, but they are harder to use and far less popular. Telegram is the one to be careful about. Its regular chats and group chats are not end-to-end encrypted by default.
Privacy in a messaging app has two layers. Encryption protects the content of messages. Metadata covers who talked to whom, when, and from where, and it can reveal as much as the messages themselves. This guide compares Signal, Telegram, Session, SimpleX, and Briar on both layers, using the apps’ own documentation and a recent comparison, and explains which one fits which person.
What “Absolute Privacy” Actually Requires
No app delivers absolute privacy, and the phrase is better treated as a checklist. A private messenger should encrypt messages end to end, so only the sender and recipient can read them. It should collect as little metadata as possible. It should publish its code so others can inspect it. It should resist both today’s attackers and future quantum computers. And it should be usable enough that your contacts will actually install it.
These goals pull against each other. The apps with the strongest metadata protection tend to have the smallest user bases, and a messenger nobody you know uses protects no conversations.
Signal: Best Balance of Privacy and Reach
State of Surveillance, a comparison site, describes Signal as using the Signal Protocol, independently audited and open source. It requires a phone number, which ties the account to your identity. The site rates Signal’s metadata collection as minimal and says Sealed Sender hides sender metadata from Signal’s servers. It lists caveats: centralized infrastructure run by the Signal Foundation, US jurisdiction, contact discovery through uploaded hashed phone numbers, and no offline messaging.
Post-Quantum Protection
Signal has led on future-proofing its encryption. A September 19, 2023 Signal post announced PQXDH, which added a post-quantum key exchange (CRYSTALS-Kyber) alongside the existing elliptic-curve exchange, so an attacker would have to break both. Signal said this addresses the “harvest now, decrypt later” threat, where an adversary stores encrypted traffic today to decrypt later with a quantum computer.
BleepingComputer reported on October 3, 2025 that Signal added a Sparse Post-Quantum Ratchet, or SPQR, on top of the Double Ratchet, forming what Signal calls a Triple Ratchet. It uses the post-quantum ML-KEM algorithm and is designed to protect future messages even if keys are stolen. The rollout is gradual. If one contact’s app does not yet support it, the security level falls back, and Signal says it will enforce SPQR across all sessions once it is available to all clients. Keep the app updated.
Telegram: Popular, but Not Private by Default
Telegram’s own FAQ answers the key question directly. Cloud Chats, which include private chats and group chats, use server-client encryption, and Telegram’s servers can access this data. Messages are stored encrypted in the Telegram Cloud so they sync across devices.
End-to-end encryption exists only in Secret Chats, which are opt-in and one-to-one. The FAQ says Telegram cannot decipher them. They are device-specific, are not stored in the cloud, cannot be forwarded, support self-destruct timers, and are deleted when you log out. The FAQ does not describe secret group chats. Voice, video, and group calls are described as end-to-end encrypted.
Telegram explains the split as deliberate. Cloud Chats allow reliable backup and multi-device access, while Secret Chats give control over data you do not want stored. It also says decryption keys are split from the data and spread across data centers in different jurisdictions, so compelling disclosure would take several court orders. That is the company’s claim about its design.
For a user who wants private conversations, the practical point is that most Telegram conversations are not end-to-end encrypted unless someone starts a Secret Chat. Telegram is a capable social and broadcasting app. It is not a Signal equivalent for private messaging.
Session: No Phone Number, With a Caveat
According to State of Surveillance, Session uses a modified version of Signal’s protocol with onion routing through community-run nodes, requires no phone number (accounts use a random ID), and does not log IP addresses. The site lists its code as open source and described as audited, and notes a much smaller user base, no voice or video calls, added latency from routing, less maturity, and some users’ distrust of its blockchain ties.
Session’s own materials add an important caveat. Its explanation page says Session moved from the Signal Protocol to its own Session Protocol, announced December 16, 2020, to suit its decentralized infrastructure. The original Session Protocol dropped perfect forward secrecy, which limits the damage if a key is later stolen. A 2026 update on the page says perfect forward secrecy is being re-implemented through Session Protocol V2, which is planned to add post-quantum cryptography. It describes V2 as currently under development and gives no timeline.
So Session offers strong anonymity at account creation, and its message encryption lacks a protection Signal has. Watch for V2’s release before treating the two as equivalent on content security.
SimpleX: Strongest on Metadata
State of Surveillance describes SimpleX as using the Double Ratchet with unidirectional message queues. It needs no phone number and has no user identifiers at all. The site lists metadata as none, says servers cannot correlate users or messages, and notes independent audits in July 2024 and October 2022. The caveats are a very small user base, harder onboarding (you must exchange links or QR codes), no contact discovery, and a relatively new project.
SimpleX is worth a look if your threat model includes someone who can watch server traffic. It is less convenient than Signal, and you will have to persuade each contact to install it.
Briar: Peer to Peer, Android Only
Briar is end-to-end encrypted using the Bramble protocol, according to the same source, and routes through Tor when internet is available. It needs no phone number. Because it is peer to peer, there are no central servers, and the site lists metadata as none. The caveats are that it is Android only (iOS is in development), has no voice or video calls, uses a lot of battery for Bluetooth scanning, has a small user base, and the most secure contact exchange requires meeting in person.
Briar suits situations where internet access is unreliable or monitored, such as a protest or a disaster. It is a specialist tool and not an everyday chat app.
Comparison at a Glance
Encryption of Everyday Chats
Signal encrypts all chats end to end. Telegram encrypts end to end only in opt-in Secret Chats. Session, SimpleX, and Briar are end-to-end encrypted by design.
Phone Number Required
Signal requires one. Session, SimpleX, and Briar do not. Telegram’s FAQ excerpt reviewed did not address this, so check Telegram’s sign-up terms.
Metadata
Signal collects minimal metadata, according to State of Surveillance. Session, SimpleX, and Briar are rated as none, a claim from that single source.
Reach and Ease of Use
Signal has by far the easiest path to talking with your existing contacts. The others have small user bases and extra steps.
How to Choose
For Everyday Private Chats
Choose Signal. Ask friends and family to install it, and turn on disappearing messages for sensitive chats.
If You Want No Phone Number or Account Link
Choose SimpleX or Session. Prefer SimpleX if you want the strongest metadata protection and can handle the setup. If you choose Session, keep it updated and watch for Protocol V2.
For Offline or Hostile Conditions
Choose Briar if you use Android and your contacts can meet or connect locally.
For Large Public Groups and Channels
Telegram is built for that, but do not treat those chats as end-to-end encrypted.
Practical Habits That Matter More Than the App
Your messenger is only one part of your privacy. Lock your phone with a strong passcode. Turn on disappearing messages when the conversation does not need to be kept. Be careful with backups, since a cloud backup of a chat can undo end-to-end encryption by storing the messages somewhere less protected. Verify safety numbers or keys with important contacts when the app offers it. Keep the app and your operating system updated.
Also remember that the person on the other end can still screenshot, forward, or leak what you send. Encryption protects messages in transit and on servers. It cannot protect you from a contact who does not keep your confidence.
Ask What You Are Protecting Against
Choosing a messenger is easier when you name the threat. If you worry about a company or hacker reading message contents, end-to-end encryption in Signal solves most of that. If you worry about someone learning who you talk to, metadata matters and the apps with no phone number and no central user list gain importance. If you worry about someone seizing your phone, the app is secondary to your passcode, disappearing messages, and full-device encryption. If you worry about future decryption, post-quantum protection matters, which is where Signal has moved first among these apps.
Most people face the first and third threats and few face the second. For them, the best messenger is the one that their family and friends will actually use, which is a practical argument for Signal.
Getting Your Contacts to Switch
A private app only works when the other person has it. Start with the few conversations that matter most, such as family, a partner, and close colleagues. Send a short invitation explaining that you are moving sensitive chats to a new app and why. Keep it simple, and do not insist that everyone move at once. For group chats, create the group in the new app and invite members one at a time.
Expect some resistance with apps like SimpleX and Briar, where onboarding means exchanging links or QR codes, or meeting in person in Briar’s case. That friction is the price of stronger metadata protection. Use those apps where the threat justifies it, and use Signal for everyday contacts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Telegram end-to-end encrypted?
Only in Secret Chats, which are opt-in and one-to-one. Telegram’s FAQ says its regular Cloud Chats, including private and group chats, use server-client encryption, and its servers can access that data.
